This residential hamlet northeast of the City of Newburgh, bears many majestic homes overlooking the Hudson River. It was named for a large cottonwood tree that, according to scientific samples, was planted there in 1699. It is thought to be the oldest Eastern Cottonwood on record in the United States. In 1976, the Department of Environmental Conservation declared the 348 square foot site surrounding the massive tree to be a public historic park. It is considered to be the smallest state forest in New York State. There are ongoing efforts to preserve the “Balmville Tree.”
Balmville is located in Orange County, NY.
